Travel Health Q & A
What is travel health?
Travel health is a specialty that focuses on your health needs when you’re traveling abroad. To ensure you get the care you need in enough time before you travel, the team at OPAL Healthcare & Wellness recommends you schedule your travel health appointment approximately four to six weeks before your trip.
What can I expect during a travel health appointment?
OPAL Healthcare & Wellness provides comprehensive care when you come in for your travel health appointment. Your provider reviews your travel plans with you, including your destination, when you plan on leaving, and how long you plan on staying. To ensure you get the best care possible, they also review your medical history, including your previous vaccinations, and conduct a physical exam.
Based on the information provided during your travel medicine appointment, your provider updates your vaccinations to protect you from infectious diseases while you travel. They may also advise you about various health concerns in your destination city or country as well as the steps you need to take to protect yourself.
If you have a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes, your provider can help you devise a medication schedule while you travel to prevent complications.
What types of vaccinations do I need before I travel?
The team at OPAL Healthcare & Wellness can determine the types of vaccinations and medications you need based on your immunization history and your travel plans.
Some of the most common vaccinations and medications provided for travel abroad include:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Meningococcal disease
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella
- Tdap
- Malaria medications
- Traveler’s diarrhea
Some vaccinations require a series of shots, so you may need to schedule more than one appointment for your immunizations to ensure you get the most effective dose.
Traveling is fun and exciting, but the last thing you want to do is spend your entire trip in your hotel room nursing an illness. Call OPAL Healthcare & Wellness today to schedule your travel health appointment, or book an appointment online. You can also schedule an appointment if you’ve had recent travel and would like to learn more about your options for vaccinations.
*Vaccinations for yellow fever, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis are not available at OPAL Healthcare & Wellness as they are given at the health department.
